Not at all. Unlike many traditional schools, Gontadou offers fluent, native-level English instruction. Because Benedict has a global background (London and Hong Kong), he doesn’t just translate terms—he explains the "why" behind the art in a way that is easy to enjoy and understand for international guests.

Most workshops focus on only classical forms. At Gontadou, we specialise in freestyle Sogetsu Ikebana. This modern approach treats flowers and branches as a medium for sculptural expression. It allows you to move beyond "rules" and focus on your own creative discovery, making it a much more personal and artistic experience.

You will be mentored directly by Benedict, a Tokyo-based Sogetsu Ikebana artist and certified instructor. Recognised by the Japanese government for his professional mastery of ikebana, he is one of the rare recipients of the official Japanese Artist Visa—a special status granted to professional cultural practitioners working in Japan. This ensures you are learning from a certified expert with a recognised standing in the Japanese art world.

Yes, we offer a very flexible format. Our studio is designed for intimacy and focus. We provide bespoke private sessions that can be tailored for 1-on-1 meditation, a creative date for couples, or a shared cultural bonding experience for families up to 3 participants. Because the session is private, we move at your specific pace.

Expect to spend around 120 minutes in the studio.

Nothing is required. We provide all professional tools—including scissors, textbooks, and towels. You are welcome to use our equipment throughout the lesson.

Our classroom is equipped with Western-style desks and chairs. We simply recommend wearing comfortable clothing suitable for creative work.

No. While ikebana arrangements themselves cannot be transported, you are welcome to wrap up your flowers to take with you at the end of the workshop. We will also make sure that you have opportunities to take photos of your finished arrangements.

The studio is located in Hatsudai, Shibuya-ku. It is a 2-minute train ride from Shinjuku Station (Keio New Line) or a short taxi ride from Yoyogi Park.

Yes. No prior experience is required. We provide all professional tools and seasonal botanicals. It is a perfect hands-on experience for tourists looking to go beyond sightseeing.
