The Tokyo Private Ikebana Experience
Experience a private Ikebana workshop in Tokyo at Gontadou Studio. Located in the peaceful Hatsudai neighbourhood, just one stop from Shinjuku, this bespoke immersion into the art of Sogetsu—one of Japan’s pre-eminent floral schools—is designed specifically for the global traveller. Under the patient guidance of a certified English-speaking instructor, you will discover the fundamental principles of Japanese floral arrangement in a modern, one-to-one setting.
The Experience
The session involves the creation of two unique arrangements. We begin with a structured study of Sogetsu’s classical forms, where you will learn the tactile skills required to handle and place floral elements with intent. For the second work, the focus shifts to freestyle expression. You are encouraged to follow your intuition and, with expert guidance, compose a final piece that reflects your personal aesthetic. These are practical, enduring skills that will elevate your floral practice at home.

Student Reviews
“The highlight of my trip was the 1-on-1 time at Gontadou. Unlike most workshops limited to classical forms, I created both a traditional and a freestyle arrangement. Gontadou’s focus on sculptural Sogetsu Ikebana allowed me to move beyond 'rules' toward true creative discovery, making it a deeply personal and artistic highlight of my time in Tokyo.”
— Nick T. (United Kingdom)“I have always been drawn to the Japanese concept of ikebana, but I never truly understood it until this workshop. The private setting allowed for a quiet, nuanced dialogue with the flowers that I don’t think is possible in a larger group. It was a rare opportunity to slow down and practice a form of non-verbal intelligence that felt both ancient and entirely modern. Truly a wonderful experience.”
— Janet C. (Singapore)“Searching for a cultural experience in Tokyo that isn't just performative can be a challenge. Gontadou is the exception. The instruction was delivered in perfect English, which allowed us to dive deep into the philosophy of Sogetsu immediately. It was a profound 'digital detox' that became the highlight of our trip."

It allows you to move beyond "rules" and focus on your own creative discovery, making it a much more personal and artistic experience.

A Sanctuary in the City While Tokyo is a city of relentless energy, an Ikebana workshop offers a rare opportunity to pause. It is more than a craft; it is a quiet retreat from the bustling streets of Shinjuku, allowing you to engage with Japanese aesthetics in a serene, focused environment.
Deepen Your Cultural Perspective Ikebana is inextricably linked to the tea ceremony, the discipline of the Samurai, and the spiritual heritage of Japan. By engaging with these floral forms, you gain a deeper lens through which to view the temples, gardens, and architecture you will encounter throughout your travels.
